Demystifying Shipping Costs

Jan 30th 2025

At ePackageSupply, we're committed to providing transparent and affordable shipping for all your packaging needs. We understand that shipping costs can sometimes seem confusing, especially when they appear disproportionately high compared to the item's price.

So, let's break down how shipping costs are calculated and what you can do to minimize expenses:

It's Not Just About Weight

Shipping carriers do not know or factor in the price of the item(s) in the package – only the package size, weight, and distance the parcel is going. And while the weight (in lbs. or oz.) of your package certainly plays a role in shipping costs, it's not the only factor. Shipping carriers like FedEx and UPS also use something called dimensional weight (DIM weight).

What is DIM weight?

DIM weight takes into account the overall size (volume) of your package – how much space it takes up on a truck, plane, or train. Even if a package is relatively light, it can still have a high DIM weight if it's large or bulky.

Why does DIM weight matter?

Shipping carriers have limited space on their vehicles. Larger packages take up more of that valuable space, so they charge accordingly. This helps them optimize their logistics and ensure fair pricing.

How Can You Minimize Shipping Costs?

  • Consolidate orders: If possible, order multiple items at once to reduce the number of shipments and potentially save on shipping costs. (Psst… ordering in bulk can also save you on per-item cost as well!)

  • Consider order weight: Be mindful of the overall weight of your order, as heavier packages will generally cost more to ship.

ePackageSupply's Commitment

  • Efficient Packaging: We carefully pack your orders using the most space-efficient methods to minimize DIM weight and shipping costs.
